English teachers deserve our praise. When they do a good job teaching the language to our students, it makes our jobs as subject area teachers easier. As teachers, we often assume that the act of passing out an assignment fulfills our duty as we hold the directions to be self-evident. We should not have to explain the directions to an assignment when they are clearly written before each section of the assessment begins. Furthermore, we should not have to break these questions down into simpler language or help our students define words from context. Here is your work; do it. When it's automatic, when the kids get to work on what you've handed them, you can thank an English teacher for giving the student the skills he or she needed to complete the assignment.
We are all teachers of reading and writing, but we may not be experts. Our language arts teachers are the first line of defense against failure. Give me a kid who can read and write on grade level and I can help him learn the material for my class, adding specialized vocabulary and phrasings from my discipline to round out his knowledge.
Thanks, English teachers. You're a great resource. Here are a few resources for you! Lesson plans, classroom sets of books, novels, plays, anthologies, dictionarie
