I'll be honest. I never learned much French in school. I took a French class in middle school and all I remember from it is how to call a waiter over to my table in a French restaurant. "Garcon!" I probably learned how to ask for the bathroom and the words for dog and cat, but all of that is gone, totally vaporized, or hidden in a cobwebbed corner of my gray matter. I have known many very fine foreign language teachers in my career. Surprisingly, the French teachers I've known do not play close to the stereotypical representations of Francophilia. Though Francophiles at heart, they educate young Americans by merging their cultural affectations into an engaging classroom experience.
Should I ever vacation in France or a French territory, I will regret the loss of my French vocabulary and grammar. I suppose I could use Rosetta Stone software to learn the language should the need arise, but it would hardly substitute for the experience of learning in French in a high school classroom.
