The health teacher is responsible for informing our children about issues related to their well-being. In New York state, I think you are automatically certified as a health teacher if you qualify for the physical education (or PE) teacher certificate. I'm not sure how it works in other states, but I would imagine that it's probably the same. Anyway, kids need to be educated on these topics. As a science teacher, I dread teaching the human reproductive system because it leads to outlandish questions about strange sexual practices and their efficacy when concerned with conception. It's a pretty funny unit, kids say the darndest things! Giving the straight dope about the effect of drugs and alcohol also falls under the health teacher's domain. Proper nutrition and exercise are a vital part of the health curriculum. As a high school teacher, I truly appreciate the work done by the health teachers in my building.
